Vodafone ES – Important Content Provider Update – October 19 17 :00 hours CET

As you know, there have been problems this week with the correct operation of WAP sites accessed through the Vodafone Spain network. These have been a consequence of the addition of web page transcoding software, which is designed to provide a much better user experience when a mobile phone browses to a full PC web page, rather than a made for mobile (WAP) page.We have been working closely over the last few days with Vodafone and the third party software provider to identify and implement a solution to the problem of the transcoder interfering with properly constructed WAP pages. At 17:00 hours CET on Friday October 19th, we can report the following status to you: Less traffic is now being fed through the transcoding gateways, meaning that the frequency of interference with WAP pages has now been reduced. However, it has not been eliminated completely and you may still experience this problem.Vodafone are constructing a “white list” which, once urls are uploaded to the list, by-pass the transcoder so these pages can be presented without interference. You will need to submit your urls to Bango and we will get these onto the white list as quickly as possible. Most importantly, a permanent fix to the problem of the transcoder interfering with properly constructed WAP pages has been worked out. This solution involves requesting information in order to identify the page type prior to directing through the transcoding route. Any page type identified as mobile will be left untouched, therefore only pages that have no mobile device information will be transcoded. We expect this solution to be in test next week, and are hopeful that subject to successful testing it will be deployed either by the end of next week or early the following week. Bango is making all of our resources available to assist with the successful deployment of this permanent solution.

In the meantime, please keep checking the Bango forum for daily updates. We would also appreciate notification from you of any change in the severity of the problem, either if it becomes less evident, or especially if it becomes more severe. Thanks,
